    Wanted - one drabble/ficlet prompt!
Resulting drabble/ficlet to be posted sometime in December.

Usual request - pairing or character, plus a 1-to-3-word prompt. Any fandom you know I write/have written is fine.

    Thanks!

[If I get multiple prompts, I will write more than one if the muse is cooperative.]

    Happy Thanksgiving!
To those who celebrate - and a happy Thursday to everyone else!

We're going to our neighbors' for the evening in about two hours; pretty much all we've done today is take Juno to the dog park (where there were a handful of other dogs), have brunch, and cook stuff to take tonight. SO's worked a bit on his window. So yeah, definitely a holiday.

Tomorrow I'm actually going to roast a turkey breast, just for us, because otherwise there would be no leftover turkey. There were fresh ones in the store yesterday when we stopped to pick up some milk, so I made the decision partly on impulse. I'll make dressing and gravy too, but other than that, it'll be some of the near-infinite supply of leftover veggies, nothing special. Probably won't make mashed potatoes, at least not for tomorrow. Possibly for with leftovers though. I contemplated making rolls (my sister having called about that recipe this morning) but I think maybe will wait and make them at Christmas instead.

    Obligatory Thanksgiving Post
For the moment, I think my mom's email to me says it all:

Happy Turkey Day! Though since I'm having pork roast and you might have ham, I could say Happy Pork Day. But that just sounds vaguely dirty.....lol.

The Self-Importance of Being Jensen by [info]vicious_trade
    J2, R
In the summer hiatus before season five of Supernatural, Jensen has a lot on his plate. It's hotter than hell outside. There's an extremely impatient girlfriend waiting for him in LA. Jared's under the weather and leaving a trail of life-sucking germs throughout the house. Plus, not to mention, the all-encompassing inner battle to 'do the right thing'. Whatever the hell that is.
I really sorta love this. NO offense to the real Jensen and Danneel (they're beautiful together), but in my fan-world this is the perfect kinda ending and I WANT IT TO BE CANON. Even the sick, hurt Jared part- Jensen taking care of him is totally perfect. This is one of the those stories where the characters speak and feel so much like the real thing that you get carried away thinking 'yes, this should so happen!'. I love the easy, realistic flow of their relationship. The honest, small minute details of living with someone that makes everything seem fuller, more real.

    Rounding the Bases by [info]crackedbuthappy
    J2 AU, NC-17
Jared is a firm believer that dating is like baseball. Every man who steps up to the plate has to work hard to round the bases. He doesn’t believe in letting anyone hit a home run; a guy has to work for it, he has to hit every base from his place in the batter’s box to sliding into home. And in Jared's baseball metaphor for life? Jensen's a very capable batter. Although it is a college AU, its really not about a college romance. Its about how to fall in love, how sex can fit into that, but not be the reason, and the amazing hot sex you can have when you wait for it - or build up to it, as Jared says! Its fun, hot and good time read.

This Is The Ultimate by [info]neros_violin
    J2 AU, NC-17
Jensen is the UFC's Welterweight Champion, and the company's biggest star. He's also its most private. Jared is the writer assigned to help the public get to know him better. Jared is begrudgingly invited into Jensen's training camp, where Jensen is preparing for the biggest fight of his career, to get a better glimpse of his professional life. But Jared soon realizes he has a personal interest in Jensen. He's surprised when Jensen returns his feelings, and a real relationship begins to develop between them. It's torn apart when a devastating news story is leaked to the press, and Jensen shuts Jared out of his life. Jared watches from the sidelines as Jensen's career disintegrates in the passage of four five-minute rounds, and refuses to stay away. What they have, and the man Jensen doesn't realize he can be, are worth fighting for.
Alright alright, I'll be honest. This has been rec'd all over the place, but I have just been really resistant to read it. I just didn't think I would really buy Jensen in this role. Not a fighter, but the whole champion thing. My presumptions about what kind of character he would be were completely off base, as was the notion that I wouldn't like it. Duh. It was a good read. The quiet determination Jensen shows, Jared's friendly nature and their chemistry were good, but I was surprised to really enjoy the training and fight descriptions. I have no idea how accurate they are, but it all reads very well - you can feel the pulse and flash of a fight night clearly.

    YAY LJ!
    LJ to the rescue!

I'm making the corn pudding recipe I made a few years back, but after a frantic search through my recipe files (and boy, I need to organize that!) proved fruitless.

But then I remembered I took some pictures of it with Boy2 because he really liked it. And lo and behold! I also had posted the recipe. *huggles LJ archives*

    Glee & etc.
I have not yet seen this week's episode, but: has anyone else found themselves just recording Glee and then fast-forwarding through it to (mostly) watch only the musical numbers? The actual "plots" have generally become deeply embarrassment (and otherwise) squick inducing for me, as much as I love the music.

While I'm talking about squick-inducing things, TCM is running a Fred Astaire marathon today, and Swing Time is on. I love this movie, not least for the completely awesome white dress with gorgeous full skirt that Ginger Rogers wears when she dances on the stairs with Fred. However! I believe that this movie is also the one which has Fred dancing in blackface. *facepalm* When I fell in love with this movie as a child, I didn't know any better, but now? Ick.

And while I'm here, I'd like to wish all who celebrate it a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Kitchin Witchin! -- Clue Hash; it's what's for breakfast!
A note of explanation: Dominus is a boy scout. As such, he has the requisite Scouting addiction to Corned Beef Hash. Anywhere we go to eat, if it's got hash on the menu, I immediately know what my husband will be ordering, no matter what else they may serve. Seriously, he loves the stuff so much that from time to time, he'll scratch the hash itch with tinned. Clearly, this was a situation I could not abide. I mean, if you're gonna feed your monkey, feed it the good stuff, right? So here's what we're having for breakfast today.

    * Go to your deli, and ask for a butt end of corned beef. Anything over a quarter of a pound is great, and they don't need to slice it for you. You'll be mincing it up at home yourself.

    * If you are pork-compliant, then chop up three good, fatty strips of bacon, and put them in a BIG, flat-bottomed pan on low heat. (The object here is to render their fat, not to cook the bacon; cooking the bacon is a side effect of the rendering.)

    * If you are pork-resistant, then do the 2 - 1 mix of olive and sesame oils here, to add the smoky taste of the bacon.

    * Peel a few cloves of garlic, and crush them with the flat of your knife. Throw those in with the bacon to render.

    * go out to the sage bushes, and get a handful of fresh leaves. Throw those in whole too.

    * Add a generous drizzle of oil into the pan to help the bacon give it up in case it's a bit chary. I think I put about two tablespoons of olive (because I keep olive oil ready to hand. You can use whatever kind of oil you fancy, really.)

    * Rough-chop a medium onion (red ones are tastiest!) and enough potatoes to match volume, then half again. In my kitchen, that was three small blue potatoes, and one large red. (I have goth tubers. No one's surprised, I know.) You want to cut them fairly large, but fairly thin -- that is to say, quarter each potato longways, and then slice the pieces about half an inch thick at most. They need to be large enough that they'll hold together, but thin enough to cook all the way through. In my case, the blue potatoes were a bit elderly, so they didn't need any pre-cooking, but I slung the red in the microwave for two turns at 30 seconds apiece, so its texture would match the others. You do as you see fit.

    * Take your biggest kitchen knife -- this is the time to break out your cleaver, if you've got one, -- hack your corned beef into crumbles. There's no rhyme or reason to this, you just whack away, and try not to let it fly all over the place.

    * Once the bacon's not showing any white anymore (that is, all its fatty rind should now be caramel coloured and kind of translucent) you can dump the onion, potatoes, and beef into the pot. If you don't have enough oil to lightly coat everything, then add just a little more, but otherwise, just turn the lot to get it evenly mixed and coated, throw in salt and pepper to taste, pat it all down flat in the pan, and walk away.

    * Ignore the sizzling, and the searing smells from the pan for a good long time. Hash is SUPPOSED to be kind of scorchy and burny, remember? If it really distressed you, you can fuss it about for awhile first, to try and get everything to cook up, but that's kind of redundant, since you're going to settle it to scorch soon anyway, and when you flip it over to do the other side, everything else will cook up then.

    * Fry up an egg for each person you'll be feeding. (From our stovetop, it looks like this is going to feed four, which means two for us today, and two lunches for Dominus later on.) Scrape all the good stuff up from the bottom of the pan, and ladle the hash into the plates, then slap the egg on top.

    * Serve with tabasco, worchestershire sauce, and ketchup on the table, but don't be surprised if your guests don't even notice they're there all.

    * Make this noise: OM NOM NOM!!!

    * Wish you were eating breakfast with Clue and Dominus today!

Fandom is a funny place. We laugh with each other. We cry at each others sorrows and cheer the victories...large and small. And sometimes we hurt each others feelings. I hope I've never done that...but I'm human and I make mistakes. If you're ever in the Chicago area - let me know...I'd love to meet every single one of you.

    Today and everyday....

My turkey is in the roaster, stuffed and happy, I have 3 dozen freshly baked yeast rolls, a coffee cake, pecan pie all done. The pumpkin pie is in the oven and the broccoli casserole is about to be made. Next it's the pretzel salad and then I can sit down with a cup of coffee and read the paper.

I hope you all have a lovely day. ♥♥

    Happy Wild Rushing Time
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. I'm taking Faeon, Chad and Patrick out to a nice buffet, then coming home to wildly throw things into a suitcase. I leave for Loscon in Los Angeles tomorrow morning (and because of the logistics of getting me to the airport, Faeon will have to drive me out to an airport hotel tonight). From there I'm going straight to Austin for SMOFcon. I'll have my laptop, of course, so I won't be entirely without the internet - not sure I could survive that.

    Happy Thanksgiving!
So it's about 9am here. I got up early to start defrosting the turkey in our never-fail hotwater method. We're also smoking a ham. Made an apple pie and a pumpkin cheesecake yesterday, as well as the dressing, a cranberry-orange relish and a chicken & butternut squash stew (for lunch today). Today I have to do, besides the turkey and ham, the corn pudding and the asparagus.

Boy2 has just gotten up; HeadBoy and Fred are still out and snuggling together. I think Boy1 is down at BlondBoy's house. We're watching the Macy's parade. Lordy, what cheese.

We stayed up late last night to watch 'Carriers'. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't the greatest movie I've ever seen. It was pretty bleak in terms of storyline. The best thing was that I figured out how to connect Albus to the TV, and it was awesome! I also found out by reading the TV user's manual (because I am female and I do that sort of thing) that our TV will connect to the internet by itself and will stream videos from Amazon. That's totally awesome. I still need to get that set up, but wow, so cool. [Hey, I remember black&white TVs with spin dials, no cable or satellite, and Star Trek when it was the most advanced show on TV.]

Went for a walk around the neighborhood yesterday, and today my left foot hurts like a mofo. Dammit.

I hope all my fellow Pilgrims have a great Thanksgiving Day. And I bid the rest of the world a very fine day.

    Car Dealer donates washing machines
... for the Lebenshilfe Verein (Life-Aid Society). The Lebenshilfe Verin is an organisation that organises, runs, and oversees house sharing for mentally disabled people. Some time ago, the chairman bought two cars for the society. He told the car dealer that there were three houses that still needed washing machines to be ready for occupation. The car dealer contacted the owner of an electronic shop, and together they donated the lacking washing machines.

I loved that story for the headline alone. :)
